This survey points to the challenge that exists as patient engagement (PE) gets wider recognition of the value it brings. Just how do all the stakeholders work together? Just why should a patient’s perspective be valued? Both the EMA Patient-focused Medicines (PFMD) effort and the US FDA Patient Focused Drug Development effort (PFDD) challenge the status quo. I have had clinical operations staff ask me “Why should I get a patient’s input? They can’t contribute a clinical perspective.”. This survey illuminates the challenges and, hopefully, starts to pave a way to charting that course. It will take time and practice but this informative survey helps explain why advancing true patient engagement has been a challenge. I hope you can learn from it, too.
